Agro-forestry is the only option for sustainable agricultural and forestry development in the Central Highlands and ensures sustainable livelihoods for people. Except for wet rice, so far, all agricultural and forestry monoculture systems have proven to be risky due to soil degradation, water, increased pests and diseases, and people have been paying a very high price for it. the application of a monoculture crop system (eg, the rapid death of pepper on a large scale now in the Central Highlands provinces, coffee pests…). A part of people in the Central Highlands is also aware of the role of the agro-forestry system and has applied it in recent times, bringing high efficiency. On this basis, the study “Assessment of the current status of forestry development and agro-forestry systems in the Central Highlands” was built and implemented.
This study is part of the project “Assessment of the current situation and proposes solutions for sustainable agricultural development, enhancing added value in the Central Highlands” (DTDL.CN 18/18) funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology, performed by Agro-forestry research group which led by Dr. Pham Van Hoi (CARES).
The study was carried out in two phases: (1) the first phase in December 2018: learn and evaluate agro-forestry production activities and services in the rainy season; (2) Phase 2 in July 2019: learn and evaluate agro-forestry production activities and services in the dry season.
2. Objectives of the study
- Research on the current status of forestry development and agroforestry systems in 5 provinces.
- Assessment of the current status, factors affecting forest resources and forestry management, production and business activities and the possibility of scientific and technological development in forestry in the Central Highlands.
- Evaluation of potential agroforestry systems in the direction of commoditization, safety, and high technology.
- Analysis of barriers and lessons learned in the process of deploying and applying science and technology in forestry and agroforestry.
- Develop a general report on assessing the current status of forestry and agroforestry development in the Central Highlands.
3. Research Methods
The research team selected research sites according to 03 criteria: (1) Presence of many and diverse types of agro-forestry; (2) Representing the Central Highlands agro-forestry ecological regions; (3) Natural, economic and social conditions are not too different from other localities.
Subjects were selected for interview by Snow-ball sampling approach on the basis of 03 criteria: (1) Knowledge of agro-forestry systems in the locality; (2) Current work related to agro-forestry development in the Central Highlands; (3) There is a diversity of agro-forestry systems being applied to farmers.
The research team has designed 03 questionnaires for 03 subjects: (1) Questionnaire for households; (2) Questionnaires for managers, researchers, NGOs; (3) Questionnaire for market actors.
4. Research results
The research team has collected survey data of 249 households and 53 officials/objects in the market. Along with that, the group completed the product according to the explanation of the research project, including: 10 reports on the current status of forestry and agro-forestry development of 05 Central Highlands provinces (05 reports of rainy season, 05 reports of dry season); reports on evaluation of the effectiveness of agro-forestry models, analysis of barriers and lessons learned, a comprehensive report on forestry and agro-forestry in the Central Highlands region (05 reports); 02 scientific articles and participated in training 01 Master.
